What Should I Bring to My Lesson?
To make sure you have the best and safest experience, here’s a list of essentials:
- Your Mountain Bike: Please ensure your bike is in good working order, especially the brakes and gears.
- Helmet: A half-lid helmet is the minimum, but we strongly recommend a full-face helmet for some lessons, especially as you progress.
- Gloves: Recommended for comfort and protection.
- Knee Pads: Strongly recommended for all lessons to protect against scrapes and impacts.
- Eye Protection: Keep your eyes safe from debris.
- Comfortable Clothing: Wear whatever you feel good in and what’s appropriate for the weather conditions.
- Waterproof Jacket: Essential for unpredictable weather, whether it’s wind or rain.
- Water Bottle & Snacks: Stay hydrated and energized!
- Any Medications: Bring any personal medications you might need.
We also recommend bringing a spare tube/pump, a bike tool, and having an adjustable seat post for most lessons.
How Do I Choose the Right Lesson for Me?
We offer lessons for all skill levels and understand it can be tricky to know where to start!
All our lessons are designed with progression in mind. We’re here to help you build your skills step-by-step.

What Level of Fitness Do I Need?
A basic level of fitness is helpful for all our lessons. However, don’t let that stop you from joining! While lessons can be physically and mentally demanding, we limit sessions to 1.5 hours to prevent overload. You won’t be riding non-stop; there’s plenty of time dedicated to learning new skills and practicing them on short trail sections.
If you’re keen to improve your fitness specifically for mountain biking, we also offer dedicated program to help you boost your endurance and strength. Get in touch!
Why Are the Lessons Women-Only?
We’ve chosen to focus our coaching on women because it’s exactly what we wished existed when we started riding! Research also shows that women often learn differently, and as a woman, I feel a stronger connection with my students. Our goal is to cultivate a supportive, encouraging environment where there’s no competition, just shared passion and growth among riders.
Can I Book a Lesson with My Friends?
Absolutely! A private lesson is perfect for this. You can book it just for yourself or gather your friends. We’ll tailor a specific session to meet your group’s needs and goals.
Do You Offer Lessons for Kids or Teenagers?
That’s awesome that your child is keen to improve their mountain bike skills! We believe that kids (and adults!) learn best when they’re with people of similar abilities and ages. Currently, all our courses are for participants aged 18 years and over.
Is Mountain Biking Dangerous?
Mountain biking is an adventurous activity and, like many outdoor sports, can involve risks. At Be-Spoke, your safety is our top priority. We make every effort to minimize unnecessary danger by:
- Choosing appropriate trails for your skill level.
- Starting with basics and progressing step-by-step.
- Helping you push your limits safely.
Throughout the course, if there’s ever anything you don’t want to do, you absolutely don’t have to. You always have the option to stop or walk a section. Please communicate with your instructor so they can find an alternative.
Is Medical Help Available if an Accident Occurs?
Yes. As your instructor, I hold a current Outdoor PHEC (Pre-Hospital Emergency Care) first aid qualification and carry appropriate communication equipment for the terrain we’ll be riding in. In the event of a serious injury, I will arrange evacuation, with the cost borne by the participant.
While I am mechanically competent and can assist with minor adjustments to ensure your bike is running safely, it is ultimately your responsibility to ensure your bike is well-maintained and safe before coming to a course or session.
Additionally, remember that eating well and staying hydrated will significantly contribute to a great experience! Alcohol and drugs are strictly prohibited while riding.
What if the Weather is Bad?
Our courses typically run in most weather conditions, though we certainly prefer sun for optimal learning! In the rare event of truly awful weather or circumstances beyond our control, we will cancel the session for safety reasons.
If a lesson is cancelled, we will contact you as soon as possible and work with you to find a new suitable date, transfer your booking to another course, or provide a refund if no other options work (please note a processing fee may apply). Your safety is paramount, and we will never put you at risk for the sake of a session.
What Type of Bike Do I Need?
Bring the bike you love and ride the most! We expect bikes to have knobbly tires and front suspension (a “hardtail” is fine). I’ll have basic tools and a suspension pump to help make minor adjustments so your bike fits you better.
For more advanced lessons, we recommend bikes with dropper seat posts. This feature allows you to lower your seat with the push of a button, which is great for safety and comfort on challenging terrain. While highly recommended for advanced riders, they are not required if you’re just starting out.
If you have any questions about specific equipment, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
What Type of Pedals Should I Use?
Use whatever you feel most comfortable on! There are two main types of pedals:
- Flat Pedals: These are fantastic for learning and building confidence, as you can easily take your feet off.
- Clipless Pedals: These require a bit more practice to unclip efficiently.
If you’re new to riding or interested in learning to jump, we highly recommend using flat pedals!
What Will the Group Size Be?
To ensure the best quality coaching, safety, and value, each course is limited to 6 people. A minimum of 3 people is required for all skills courses to run.
How Long Are the Courses and Private Sessions?
Skills courses are 1.5 hours long (remember to bring a snack!), and Private Lessons are 2 hours.
What Happens if There Aren't Enough People for a Course?
If a course doesn’t meet the minimum of 3 participants 48 hours before it’s scheduled to run, we’ll offer to move your booking to another course date. If we can’t find a suitable alternative date or another lesson you’d like to join, we will issue a refund (please note a processing fee may apply).
How Do Cancellations and Refunds Work?
If you need to cancel your course or session, the following refund policy applies:
- 7 days or more before your course: 50% refund
- 1-6 days before your course: 25% refund
- Less than 24 hours before your course: No refund
Do You Offer Gift Vouchers?
YES! Gift vouchers are available for purchase on our gift voucher page.
Please also review our Terms and Conditions page for more detailed information.
